But don't spend too much money and effort restricting yourself to one narrow sector before checking out what kind of customer base you could attract. However, the demand for all types of fitness related guidance and teaching is evident nationwide. So if your passion is to build a career in this industry, with the right skill-set, knowledge and certifications you could do very well.
Be aware when you start looking for your training or retraining to become certified that standards vary enormously from one organisation to another. Regard your exploratory searching of different training providers as your first piece of coursework! Finding the best company for you will be worth the effort - a morning surfing the net will throw up a great deal about which courses and certificates are most widely respected.
If you know that health and fitness is for you, but you're not sure where to specialise, let's look into it more closely. Working as a trainer or instructor means different things to different people, because there are so many aspects to learn about. It isn't just knowing how to train clients with exercises to get their heart pumping fast - of course personal trainers and gym coaches need to cover that, but a professional has a good deal more to learn than that.
Look for scientific modules in fitness training programmes. You can be educated on kinesiology, anatomy, psychology, physiology and biomechanics. Plus there's weight and nutritional advice, along with attitude and motivation. Together with cardio and strength training and gym machinery. Then don't forget PC skills and clients assessments. Finally, if you're considering working for yourself it's likely you'll need to know about marketing yourself, accounts, insurance, certain legal issues and running your own admin system. Wow...
But you don't need to be an expert on the whole list to begin with, and it's not unheard of for a person to specialise in one or two directions and carve out a very good living for themselves.
How about diet and food science? On the nutrition side you can learn about the different nutrient groups, in which foodstuff they're to be found and how they affect the body. Learn about food absorption, metabolism and digestion. Progress to weight control, and how our lifestyles can affect our diet and consequently determine how heavy we are. Plus there are things to learn about exercise to calories burned, sports nutrition and healthy eating.
Personal training is becoming increasingly popular, so if you're energetic and have good motivational and communication skills this could be for you. Look for courses that are scientifically based, as you need to really understand the fundamental physiological elements of fitness to instruct others successfully.
If you have a real interest in working out and currently visit the gym 3 or 4 times a week, then perhaps gym instruction is for you. Search for training programmes that have a lot of practical content, backed up by in-depth theory classes. You must be able to work with a new person and create an exercise routine that is safe and functional for their needs. Good client assessment training is therefore essential. Furthermore, when you've completed your course you should be proficient in guidance and communication, gym equipment plus cardiovascular and resistance training.
Your career as a fitness trainer could be boosted by having a supplemental skill in the prevention and treatment of injuries. If you like the sound of this, do your research on terms like sports injuries, massage therapy, sports rehabilitation and building strength after injuries.
You could add on an extra service for your clients by carrying out personal health and fitness testing. So you would get trained on measuring and monitoring people's fitness levels via a number of different tests. We're talking about factors that can risk heart disease, cholesterol, blood pressure, body fat etc.
